34 days and about 8300 miles after we left, we finally arrived home. The hounds were not particularly excited at first, but they did seem happy to be able to walk freely around the backyard. We were equally happy to be able to let them out on their own.
Everything was in order. After hearing about the torrential downpours Maryland had received while we were in the Grand Canyon, we thought we might have had some slight flooding, but everything looked okay. The grass in the backyard had grown quite a bit in our absence, as had the flowering weeds in the old flower garden. It took almost an entire day to get the backyard back under control.
All in all, it was a wonderful trip. We saw many things on our journey, both at the destinations we visited and in the spaces between them, and we had a lot of fun. Even the days we spent crossing the country weren`t too bad: we always got to our site before nightfall, and it didn't take us long to set up the camper.
For the most part, the hounds took the adventure in stride. There were times when the older hounds wouldn`t eat their meals without additional "seasoning" (dog treats broken up into pieces, some canned meat, etc.), and of course Frazzle had occasional issues with walking on hot, sunny days, but other than that they came through the experience without incident and without injury.
Would we do a trip like this again if we could?
Absolutely.
